International Protection Monthly Update – July 2025

Inmigrantes reciben ayuda y protección internacional

The Ministry of the Interior has published the accumulated monthly progress of international protection, with data as of July 31, 2025. This report reflects the status of asylum applications and other forms of protection filed in Spain, as well as the resolutions adopted by the administration in the first seven months of the year.

1. What is the monthly progress of international protection?

This is an official statistical report that summarizes:

  • The total number of registered applications for international protection.
  • Distribution by type of protection (refugee, subsidiary, humanitarian reasons).
  • Resolutions issued: concessions, refusals and other administrative dispositions.

2. Cumulative applications as of July 2025

During the first seven months of the year, Spain has continued to register a high volume of asylum applications. Although the final report provides the exact figures, the trend confirms:

  • A sustained increase compared to the same months in 2024.
  • A significant concentration of applications in large cities such as Madrid, Barcelona and Valencia.
  • The persistence of nationalities that historically lead the applications, such as Venezuela, Colombia and Peru.

These data show that Spain continues to be one of the European countries with the greatest asylum pressure.

3. Resolutions issued

The report also details the number of cases resolved between January and July 2025.

In general terms:

  • The granting of refugee and subsidiary protection status remained stable, although as a low percentage of total applications.
  • Most of the finalized files end in denial.
  • The processing of applications for residence permits for humanitarian reasons continues, especially for applicants from certain Latin American countries.

This reflects both administrative saturation and the restrictive trend in granting full refugee status.

4. Evolution and comparison with previous years

The year-over-year comparison shows that the number of applications in 2025 is in line with the steady growth since 2019 (with the exception of the temporary decline during the pandemic).

In the case of resolutions, the administration has tried to speed up response times, although the data suggest that the backlog remains a structural challenge.

What does this development mean for applicants and professionals?

  • Asylum seekers: processing times are likely to remain long, so it is essential to have specialized advice to ensure proper filing and follow-up of the file.
  • Professionals and NGOs: these data are key to planning resources and assistance, as they anticipate the administrative and social burden in the coming months.
  • Migration policy: the publication confirms the need to reinforce means and personnel at the Asylum and Refugee Office (OAR) in order to respond to the growing demand.
