INTERNATIONAL DRIVING PERMIT

When should I consider obtaining an international driving permit?

We usually consider obtaining an international driving permit when planning to travel to a foreign country for a period exceeding 90 days.

What is meant by a foreign country?

Foreign countries are those located outside the European Union or the European Economic Area (Norway, Iceland, Liechtenstein).

Where does my Spanish driving license allow me to drive?

Your Spanish driving permit authorizes you to drive within the European Union and the European Economic Area (Norway, Iceland, Liechtenstein). You may also drive with your permit in countries with which there is a bilateral treaty regarding traffic and transport. Below is a link for you to consult the bilateral agreements.

How can I apply for my international driving permit?

You can request it in two ways. The first way is online, accessing the DGT website with your digital certificate, electronic ID, or cl@ve credentials. The second way is in person by submitting all documentation at any Traffic Headquarters or Office.

What is the best way?

The best way is to request it online, as in this case, your permit will be available within two business days after making your request; however, if you do it in person, you must request an appointment (subject to office availability) and go to the office to submit your application.

What documentation do I need?

If you do it online, you must have your digital certificate, electronic ID, or cl@ve credentials installed to access the service. If it is in person, you must have your original and valid documentation at hand (DNI if you are Spanish, NIE if you are a foreigner).

Do I have to go in person or can someone else do it for me?

The process can be carried out by anyone or an authorized person. If you wish to authorize someone, you must use the representation form provided in the link.

How much is the fee?

€10.30 updated for 2020.

How long is the permit valid for?

The validity is one year and it cannot be extended. If you NEED a new one, you must apply for it again.

My Spanish driver’s license has expired, will it still be valid?

No, it must be valid, as it must always accompany the international permit.
