Recognition of High School Diplomas in Spain: Complete Application Process in Barcelona and Online

We analyze your case, review documents, prevent errors, and track your case.

Why should you have your high school diploma recognized in Barcelona through MC Abogados?

If you completed high school outside of Spain and need your credentials to be officially recognized here, at Martínez Caballero Abogados we’ll help you process the recognition of your high school diploma as equivalent to the Spanish “Bachiller” degree from start to finish. We’ll review whether your case qualifies, verify your academic documentation, guide you through the 079 fee, the apostille or legalization, and the official translation, and we’ll submit your application correctly to avoid errors and delays. The Ministry of Education allows for the recognition of foreign non-university degrees and studies provided they are official, have been fully completed, and are sufficiently equivalent to the Spanish system.

What is the recognition of a high school diploma?

Recognition is the process by which the Spanish government declares that your foreign non-university degree or educational credentials are equivalent to the corresponding Spanish degree. In the case of high school, this means that, if you meet the requirements, you can obtain official recognition as equivalent to the Spanish Bachiller diploma. The Ministry distinguishes between homologation—when a qualification is deemed equivalent to a Spanish diploma—and validation—when a qualification is deemed equivalent to specific courses required to continue your studies.

Who is eligible to apply for high school equivalency certification?

Those who have completed studies under a foreign educational system may apply, provided that those studies and degrees are officially recognized in their country, have been fully completed, are sufficiently equivalent to the Spanish high school diploma, and the applicant has not already obtained the same degree in Spain. The Ministry also clarifies that individual courses or study periods shorter than a full academic year are not recognized or validated.

When You Need to Have Your High School Diploma Recognized

The recognition of a high school diploma is usually the appropriate procedure when you have completed upper secondary education abroad and need it to be officially recognized in Spain as equivalent to the Spanish Bachillerato. Many websites in this field focus this process primarily on people who want to continue their academic path in Spain, and the Ministry itself also provides a conditional enrollment form specifically so that you can enroll while your application is being processed.

Official Requirements for the Recognition of a High School Diploma

1. Official Studies

Your academic credentials must be officially recognized by the educational system of your country of origin.

2. Courses successfully completed

The Ministry requires that foreign academic programs be completed in their entirety; individual courses or subjects are not eligible for recognition.

3. Sufficient equivalence to the Spanish high school diploma

There must be academic equivalence in terms of duration and content with the corresponding Spanish degree.

4. Authorized Center

If the studies were completed at a foreign institution located in Spain, that institution must be authorized by the relevant Spanish educational authority.

5. Not have already earned the same degree in Spain

Recognition cannot be requested if the same degree or course of study has already been obtained within the Spanish educational system.

Documents Required to Have Your High School Diploma Recognized

For recognition of ESO and Bachillerato credentials, the Ministry requires, as a minimum, a certified copy of your identification document, a certified copy of your official foreign degree or diploma, or a certificate attesting to your successful completion of final exams, and an academic transcript listing the courses taken, grades, and academic years. If part of your prior studies were completed in Spain, an official academic transcript from the Spanish education system may also be required.

Apostille, legalization, and certified translation: the area that causes the most errors

The Ministry is clear: all documents must be official and, where applicable, duly legalized and accompanied by an official translation into Spanish. Legalization is not required for documents issued in EU countries , Switzerland, or the EEA. If the country is a party to the Hague Convention, an apostille is sufficient; in all other cases, legalization is typically done through diplomatic channels. The official translation may be performed by a sworn translator authorized in Spain, a consulate, or a diplomatic mission in cases where this is permitted.

Where to Submit the Application

The application can be completed through the Ministry’s online portal, but to formally initiate the procedure, it must be submitted to a registration office, along with the appropriate documentation and proof of payment of the corresponding fee. The Ministry allows applications to be submitted at administrative registry offices, Government Delegations or Subdelegations, the Ministry’s General Registry, and also at Spanish diplomatic missions abroad.

In Catalonia: Who Processes Your Case

The processing depends on your place of residence. The Ministry expressly states that if you reside in Catalonia, the application is processed through the relevant service linked by the Generalitat. This is especially important for a landing page targeting Barcelona, because it allows you to tailor the local aspect of the service with much greater precision.

Official decision deadline

The official deadline for resolving applications for recognition or validation is 3 months, starting from the date the application is properly completed. The Ministry adds that, if no decision is issued within that period, the lack of a response is deemed a rejection, although the Administration remains obligated to issue an explicit decision.

Can I enroll before the decision is issued? Yes: conditional enrollment form

Yes. The Ministry provides a conditional enrollment form, which is submitted along with the application to allow you to enroll in the courses or exams you wish to take while your equivalency is being processed. The Ministry itself notes that this form does not guarantee a favorable decision, but it can be key to avoiding a loss of academic time.

How We Can Help You at Martínez Caballero Abogados

1. We review your case

We’ll let you know right from the start whether your academic record qualifies for recognition as a high school diploma, whether validation would be the right approach, or if there are any areas that need strengthening. That initial guidance is also one of the messages most frequently used by law firms and consulting firms competing in this field.

2. We review documents and prevent errors

We verify that the degree, transcripts, identification, and supporting documents meet the official criteria for validity, legalization, and translation.

3. We prepare the application

We’ll help you fill out the application, prepare the documentation for registration, and guide you through the process of paying the applicable fee.

4. We process the conditional registration form

If you need it to continue your studies, we’ll help you apply for it along with your application.

5. We follow the procedure until we receive the ID card

The Ministry states that the resolution is recorded on an individual certificate, which has the same legal effect as documentation issued by the Spanish education system to certify the completion of studies or the possession of the corresponding degree.

What other services in the sector are doing and how we can improve that offering

The highest-ranking competitor websites in this area tend to follow a similar pattern: a specific section for middle school and high school, a focus on document review, and the sale of an “end-to-end” service to prevent errors in requirements, translations, or documents. We would follow that approach, but with one advantage: basing the content much more heavily on the official source and structuring it better for transactional and local searches.

Why should you have your high school diploma recognized with the professional assistance of Martínez Caballero Abogados?

The recognition of a high school diploma may seem like a simple process, but in practice it requires meeting specific requirements and submitting the documentation correctly. Errors in the legalization, translation, or the application itself can cause delays or result in additional requests for information.

At Martínez Caballero Abogados, we analyze your case, review all the documents, and handle the process to ensure your application is submitted correctly from the start, avoiding complications and saving you time.

Frequently Asked Questions About High School Diploma Recognition in Barcelona

Official academic programs that have been fully completed and are equivalent to Spanish academic programs or degrees may be recognized. Individual courses are not recognized.

Yes, but the school must be properly authorized by the relevant Spanish education authority.

At a minimum, identification, an official foreign degree or diploma, and an academic transcript listing courses, grades, and years of study.

Yes, except for documents from the EU, Switzerland, or the EEA. If the country is a party to the Hague Convention, an apostille is usually sufficient.

Yes, if the documents are not in Spanish, they must be accompanied by an official translation.

Catalonia has its own competent agency to handle the process, in accordance with the Ministry’s official distribution by address.

The official processing time is 3 months from the date the application is properly completed.

Failure to issue a decision within the prescribed time limit results in the matter being dismissed, although the Administration remains obligated to issue an express decision.

Yes, through the conditional registration form, which allows you to enroll while your application is being processed.

No. Accreditation means obtaining recognition of the entire degree; validation refers to specific courses taken to continue one’s studies.

The individual accreditation certificate has the same legal effect as the documentation required of students in the Spanish education system to certify that they have successfully completed their studies or hold the corresponding degree.

This is because industry websites themselves point out that the most common errors stem from poorly prepared documents, incorrect translations, or missing requirements, and the official source adds that the reviewing authority may request additional documentation if it deems it necessary. A file that is well-organized from the start reduces delays and requests for additional information.
